I know a lot of you birders like to read my blog, but there is also a large amount of non-birders who follow this blog as well. Since I felt like switching things up a bit this week, I decided to make a video dedicated to all the non-birders out there. In this video I break down the basics of birding, from how to identify a bird to how weather patterns play an important role in where to bird. Overall, I did this video for non-birders to get a better understanding of birding!

Nice job. Hope your trip tomorrow will be full of migrants and even a few lifers.

That was great! And as a nonbirder I am really impressed by the depth of knowledge, in a variety of fields, you need to have to become a proficient birder. I'd love to find out what equipment you bring out to the field, and if expert camera work is part and parcel of birding as well. Do you usually identify species while you're in the field, or check your guide once you get home? How do you find out if you wrongly identified a species? How many bird species do most birders know off the top of their heads without having to check their field guides? What percentage of Illinois birds have you already seen?

Isoo!!! I love this so much! All of those times I sit in the car waiting while you bird...I never knew what you were looking for. This is so helpful in my understanding of birding. I think you should address questions and do a apart 2! And it's pretty impressive that you did this in one long take on your iphone without any help or urging. You are so cool.
